What is Architecture?

Architecture is where xOx transforms the structured project understanding created during Analysis into architecture documents.

The purpose of this phase is to prepare the project for Contract.

What does Architecture produce?

Architecture creates two complementary views of the project.

Technical Architecture

A technical document describing:

  • how the system is expected to be structured
  • major components and responsibilities
  • important boundaries
  • integrations
  • operational considerations

This document is intended for people who need a technical understanding of the solution.

Executive Architecture

A business readable document designed for discussions, reviews, and decision making.

Its purpose is to help stakeholders understand:

  • what is being built
  • why it exists
  • how the solution operates
  • what the major moving parts are
  • what value the project is expected to deliver

This document is designed to be understandable without requiring deep technical knowledge.

Why does this phase exist?

Before a project can be locked into a Contract, there must be a shared understanding of both the technical and operational reality of the solution.

Architecture creates that understanding.

Remember

Architecture is where structured project understanding becomes documented project architecture.
